My hair journey unexpectedly began in mid 2013. I had always been a straightener/GHD/straight hair girl, always wanting my hair to be straight and beautiful, or so I thought. I used the word “unexpectedly” as 2013 was filled with A LOT of changes in my life. I quit my job after 6 years and took some time off. During the months leading up to this I started cutting my hair shorter and shorter, until one day, while working from home I thought “why not wear my hair curly? Nobody’s going to see me LOL”.
Since then, I wore it curly and the transitioning began! At first it was as if I had two different types of hair on my head. Half of my hair curled BEAUTIFULLY but the other half was so straight! I then decided to do an “undercut” on the side where the hair was straight, with the hope that it would grow out curly. In 2014, I decided to grow my hair longer because my head too cold in winter! Up to mid 2015, it was just wash and go with leave-in conditioner and washing weekly without deep conditioning as I was so lazy! Towards the end of 2015, I learned that I need to leave my hair in its natural state so that the natural oils do their work and from then, made an effort to take better care of my hair. In 2017, I discovered the pre-poo method and I started experimenting with various products to see what was best for my hair. As you can see from the pics, it was a good year for my hair! Things got serious in 2018 and I started using the LOC (Liquid Oil Cream) method and discovered that I cannot use coconut oil on my hair because it made my scalp itch.
I also began deep conditioning, paying more attention to the ingredients in my hair products and started protective styling. My first protective style was the two-strand method, then braiding using my own hair and that improved my curl pattern tremendously. 2018 was also the year I discovered Marley Grey Accessories. They have been a MAJOR part of my journey and I haven’t looked back. When I purchased my first satin pillowcase and satin doek it made a significant difference to the moisture and my frizz also decreased dramatically. It’s my sixth year and I am still learning. I’ve also added 2 pineapple doeks to my collection, a satin bow, two satin-lined beanies and not forgetting my Deep Conditioning cap all from Marley Grey. Looking at these photos, I realise that I’ve come a LONG way. My hair is growing every day and I love my bossie kop whether it’s a braid out or a wash and go.
Aunt Jackie’s and Palmer’s Olive Oil products are what I use most and my hair LOVES Olive Oil! I tie my hair up as little as possible and when I do, I use a loose pom-pom. I find this helps my hair grow. I’ve never really sat and thought about my journey until now, thank you for the opportunity to share and for all your support!
Lots of Love,
Danialle Leigh Marchant
