It's time to focus on “finger detangling”. We always hear about the Denman/Detangling Brush or a wide-toothed comb for detangling, but what about our built-in detangling tools?
Finger combing is a simple way to detangle that prevents hair loss and encourages hair growth. It could be the best detangling method in the history of natural hair...if done correctly.
If you want to grow luscious, beautiful hair we highly recommend this method rather than using brushes or combs. Yes, this increases the time spent on wash days, but when using our fingers we're physically feeling our strands...feeling where those knots are and using our fingers to carefully "uncuddle" them.
For best results, it is advisable to set aside additional time to finger detangle. The extra time is needed since you have to work with caution. Finger detangling will not work if rushed as you'll end up ripping through your hair.
Our founder Marion says "I have a mixture of 4a and 4b type hair and the middle of my hair is dryer and more tangled than the rest of my hair and I discovered this while finger detangling. You can only get to know your hair when you physically interact with it. Finger detangling gives you a better understanding of your hair and its needs.
I still love my detangling brush but one of my hair goals for 2020 is to do more finger detangling and this ultimately leads to my other hair goal: length. "
Finger detangling requires no "rukking and plukking" (pulling and tugging ) as opposed to brushing or combing and thus helps to produce stronger hair growth from the follicles.
Here are the advantages of Finger Detangling:
- Twist outs stay fresh for longer.
- Reduced breakage.
- Finger detangling strengthens growth at the follicle.
- Finger detangling reduces shrinkage and elongates the hair unlike curl defining tools, leading to shrinkage.
- Aids hair growth.
- Increases length retention.
Disadvantages of Traditional Combing/Detangling:
- Combing excessively weakens the hair.
- Increases shedding.
- Causes breakage.
- Less painful.
- Reduced frizz.
We recommend the following products to assist with finger detangling:
- Aloe Cado Prepoo
- Tresemme Detangling Butter (not Curly Girl Approved)
- Flaxseed Gel
- Aloe Gel (directly from the plant)
- Shea Butter
- Curl Chemistry Detangling Conditioner
- Your normal conditioner can also be used but make sure it has good slip
